Canzonare “teases” the musical palate with little-known offerings from the historical performance repertoire. Guest artist Joy Grimes adds the warmth of baroque violin to the tones of soprano Sarah Bellott, historical flutist Kateri Chambers, and historical keyboard player Dylan Sauerwal, in their program Barque, Patrick O’Brian’s seafaring Aubrey-Maturin soundtrack, on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at the historic Loring-Greenough House, 12 South Street, Jamaica Plain.

The Sunday Afternoon at the ‘Greenough House series recreates the atmosphere of 18th and 19th century “musical afternoons” in the 1760 Loring-Greenough House, twice monthly, October to May. En Barque is the soundtrack of J.S. Bach, Corelli, operatic excerpts, and Locatelli as found in  Patrick O’Brian’s seafaring Napoleonic Aubrey-Maturin series:  “…although [Stephen Maturin] and Jack Aubrey were almost as unlike as men could be…  they were united in a deep love of music, and many and many an evening had they played together, violin answering… or both singing together far into the night” [IOM:154].Canzonare will be joined by guest artists Joy Grimes, baroque violin, and Emma Gavenda, harpsichord.


Soprano Sarah Bellott has appeared as a soloist with La Donna Musicale and Boston University Baroque Orchestra. She has also frequently been a soloist in cantatas at the First Lutheran Church of Boston. Her recent recitals include an evening of French airs de cour with lutenist Catherine Liddell and gambist Laura Jeppesen, as well as the Monteverdi Vespers with the Sounds of Stow Festival Chorus. She has also performed with Exultemus, the Copley Singers, and Marsh Chapel. Her primary studies are with Sharon Daniels at Boston University. She has also coached with Martin Pearlman, Peter Sykes, Catherine Liddell, Stephen Stubbs and Gillian Keith.


Kateri Chambers is currently working towards completing her DMA on traverso at Boston University while studying with Christopher Krueger and researching her dissertation regarding the evolution of French agréments from air de cour repertory. She can be heard with local groups including Boston University Baroque Orchestra, Harvard University Baroque Chamber Orchestra, and Harvard Early Music Society (Boston Musical Intelligencer Review dubbed her a “skilled and sensitive player”). Previously, she studied with Dr. Stephen Preston at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (MMus 2007) and Colin St. Martin at Peabody Conservatory (BM 2006) where she was heard performing with many of their Early Music ensembles. While in Baltimore she performed regularly with her traditional Irish music ensemble Ash & Rowan and with her own early music ensembles (Ensemble Chaeron and Flžtes Caquets). Kateri is currently teaching private lessons through Musika and out of her home studio around DC, MD, and VA. She is also teaching and tutoring in a wider spectrum of fields through Howard Community College, Classic Tales ‘n Tunes, and Wyzant in DC, MD, and VA. Kateri is also known for her talents as an actor and dancer-skills which augment her performances-and she can currently be seen in dance venues around Massachusetts and theatrically at the Maryland Historical Society.


Dylan Sauerwald performs widely as a continuo player and soloist on harpsichord, organ and fortepiano in Montréal and in Boston. As co-founder of Ensemble la Félicité, he won the first place title in chamber music at the Concours de Musique du Canada 2009 and was a finalist at the Montreal Baroque CBC?Galaxie chamber music competition 2007. He has a passion for early opera, serving for several years as harpsichordist for Opera McGill and now as accompanist for Tafelmusik’s summer opera institute with Opera Atelier. He was music director for a staged production of Joseph Bodin de Boismortier’s opéra-comique Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse by Ensemble la Félicité. Recently, he co-founded Helios Early Opera, a Boston-area opera project devoted to staging less-performed pieces from the seventeenth through the early nineteenth century, and is its co-artistic director. Mr. Sauerwald did early studies with Christa Rakich and John Gibbons and holds a BMus in early keyboard performance from McGill University, having studied under Luc Beauséjour and Hank Knox. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in historical keyboard performance at Boston University with Martin Pearlman and Peter Sykes.


Built in 1760, the Loring-Greenough House, a local landmark listed on the Massachusetts and National Registers of Historic Places, is located at 12 South Street (at the Civil War Monument) in Jamaica Plain, MA. It is owned and managed by the non-profit Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club, Inc. as a historic house museum and site for art and music presentations. The Loring-Greenough House is wheelchair accessible. The Boston-based jazz trio Yas Ishibashi (keyboard and vocals), Bob Wyckoff (trumpet and vocals), and Liz Horwitz (bass) present a program of songs, ballads and swing tunes from what is often referred to as “The Great American Songbook,” music from the 30′s through the 50′s.

  • Sunday,  January 20: Mimi Rabson Trio: (Mimi Rabson, Helen Sherrah-Davis, Junko Fujiwara) present repertoire of new chamber music that includes improvisation for string trio.
