Which Jamaica Plain Intersections Need 'Don't Block the Box' Markings?

The city has rolled out a New York City-style "Don't Block the Box" campaign urging drivers not to enter intersections if they can't get through. Which JP intersections need "Don't Block the Box" markings and signs?

Last week 18 intersections across the city started sporting ".

It's a $150 fine to drive into an intersection that you can't get through before the light turns red. None of the initial 18 intersections is in JP. Where in our neighborhood do we need "Don't Block the Box" campaigns?

As a Forest Hills resident I nominate the intersection of Washington and New Washington. It's murder at rush hour with folks trying to turn left from Arborway onto Washington. Where else?

I will second that nomination. That intersection drives me batty.

Now that I think about it, for that Washington and New Washington intersection, it's also traffic coming down Washington toward Forest Hills and trying to turn up onto the access road to Shea Circle that blocks the box a great deal.

I'd say all the intersections around Forest Hills. The whole lot of them. Washington at Ukraine; Ukraine and Hyde Park Avenue; all the craziness by New Washington and South streets. I can't wait for it to be designed.

The intersection in Canary Square where Boylston, Centre and Moraine Streets intersect with So Huntington Ave.

I vote for the intersection in front of the post office at Green & Centre Streets.

I second Karla's choice!

Ditto for Centre and Green Street!

I've expounded on Patch about the dangers of that intersection (Green & Centre), where Centre Street drivers routinely run the red light. Not because they're all scofflaws, I'm sure, but that they just don't see those teeny-tiny red lights. So a "don't block the box!" sign would help drivers pay more attention all the time.

It's not in JP but it definitely impacts getting in and out of JP: the intersection of Columbus Ave., Tremont St., and Melnea Cass Blvd. at Ruggles. It's always amazing to me how crazy that intersection is and how little traffic enforcement happens there, just blocks from police headquarters.

Amen, Gretchen. And while we're at it, what about starting to enforce all the alleged "no parking" areas on Columbus heading out-of-town, right in front of the police station? Heading toward JP from the city during evening rush hour = bad.
