PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy Rips Down Forest Hills Billboard

BOSTON, MA -- A billboard about the legal drinking age being 21 was no match for 59-mph gusts blowing through Boston.

A large billboard atop a row of businesses in Forest Hills toppled Monday afternoon about 4:55 p.m., according to Twitter user alertnewengland.

Once JP Patch arrived at the scene, it did not appear that anyone was injured. Police had Washington and Hyde Park Avenue blocked off while a Department of Public Works earth mover worked to deal with the debris. The street has since been reopened, according to scanner traffic.

The billboard carried a public service announcement about the city of Boston's effort to stop underage drinking. It fell on its side, leaning on a tree so that it remained erect. The bulldozer brought it down to sidewalk and street level, reducing the safety hazard of it falling further.

The ad board greeted subway riders as they emerged from the Forest Hills T station. The billboard was above Fazenda Coffee Roasters and an unoccupied piece of retail property for rent.

Next door at the Dogwood Cafe, manager Emily Voiss said she and her staff heard a loud noise. But then it was back to business as usual. The popular neighborhood spot is open despite Hurricane Sandy and will keep serving pizzas as long as the oven works, Voiss said.

There has been a movement afoot in JP to get billboards taken down. Like nearly all Boston billboards, this one is owned by Clear Channel Communications.
