Centre Street Laid Out 350 Years Ago Today

The 350th birthday of this street is today.

Jamaica Plain Patch reader Michael Reiskind said he recently discovered that the 350th anniversary of the laying out of Centre Street is Thursday, Jan. 19. That's today — so happy 350th birthday, Centre Street.

Reiskind sent along page 99 from the 1910 "Record of the Streets, Alleys, Places, Etc., in the City of Boston," showing the history of Centre Street, which makes up the main street of the neighborhoods of Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury.

Most of the street, from Eliot Square in Roxbury to the South Street intersection in West Roxbury, was laid out on January 19, 1662. It was called Middlepost road from Boston to Hartford, and later named Centre Street in 1825.

Thanks to Michael for sending along this cool bit of Boston neighborhood and Jamaica Plain history!
