Pick of the Week
Video Underground's Tom Wickersham prepared Tom's pick of the week:
Super
wri/dir James Gunn, 2011
Where to find it: New Releases/Comics Superheroes
The Crimson Bolt has no super powers, only a wrench. And a cinder block. And guns. The Office’s Rainn Wilson plays the titular superhero of Troma alumnae James Gunn’s dark comedy where a most ordinary man is driven to become a homemade superhero. A life-long sufferer of humiliation, fry-cook Frank (Wilson) is driven to the brink after his wife leaves him for a sleazy drug dealer (played with relish by Kevin Bacon.) What follows is a deliciously twisted descent into amateur superhero madness as Frank unleashes his brand of disturbingly vicious vigilante justice on the criminal population. He is aided by his sidekick and superhero guru, Boltie, a foul-mouthed and sexually aggressive comic book store clerk played by Ellen Page (Juno, Inception.) Truly, superheroes, the finger of god, hentai tentacle fantasies, and unnervingly comic violence has never been combined into a comedy with this much heart.
BONUS: Check out Gunn’s first feature as writer/director, 2006’s Slither, a gooey alien creature-feature with plenty of gore, and the laughs often missing from the horror/comedy genre. Perfect for a late Halloween.
