Jamaica Plain Resident Taking Part in Ride to End Alzheimer's

A Jamaica Plain resident will be among several biking along a 62-mile route on Saturday, July 12. 

The reason for the trek? Leigha Gillespie is riding in the 2014 Ride to End Alzheimer's that begins in Fort Devens and finishes in Southern New Hampshire. 

"I am riding in memory of my friend Katrina's Nana who had Alzheimer's," Gillespie wrote on her donation page. "Because I have seen the seriousness of this disease firsthand, I would like to do my part in making a difference."

In addition to the 62-mile route, the Ride comprises a two-mile family ride, as well as 30-mile and 100-mile routes. The event itself raises awareness and funds to support the Alzheimer's Association research of treatments and eventually a cure. 

"Over the past 18 years, Ride to End Alzheimer's has raised more than $3 million to fund critical Alzheimer's research through the Alzheimer's Association's research grants program," James Wessler, CEO and President of the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts/New Hampshire chapter said in a statement. "We are grateful for the dedication of Leigha and all of those participating in the Ride for their commitment to finding a cure and raising awareness."
