Hundreds of Fish Die at Jamaica Pond, Month after Many Released Into Waters

About 400 perch were reported dead at the pond last weekend.

A little more than a month after more than 1,200 fish were released into the Jamaica Pond, about 400 were found dead and washed ashore over Memorial Day Weekend, the Jamaica Plain Gazette reported

On Tuesday, April 29, Massachusetts state and local officials gathered to release more than 1,200 hatcher-raised trout into the pond to ring in the spring fishing season. Students from the Mary Curley K-8 school in Jamaica Plain and the John F. Kennedy Elementary School took part in the event, at which they stocked the pond with about 1,000 rainbow trout, 100 black trout, 100 brown trout and 50 tiger trout.

The majority of the fish found in the recent die-off were reportedly among those placed into the pond as part of last month's stocking effort, but officials said that die-offs like this are not uncommon, according to the Gazette.
