Diet Delivery Service Helps JP Woman Find Balance After Battling Cancer

Gretchen Breese lost 15 pounds after starting a bistroMD plan.

When Gretchen Breese overcame a form of Stage III ovarian cancer, she found she had lost a significant amount of energy.

As she underwent a regimen of aggressive chemotherapy treatment, the 58-year-old Jamaica Plain resident's weight dropped 148 to 120 pounds before climbing again, a matter that made her strive for a form of balance.

"When I had to return to work after surgery and very rough chemotherapy, I was so exhausted I could barely open a can of soup when I got home at night," she said.

That was enough to help her strive to find some form of health program that would be both rewarding and convenient.

"Since I had also put weight on as soon as the chemo ended I started looking for pre-made healthy food that would also help me lose the weight," Breese said. "All of the fresh local options would have quickly doubled my weight and depleted my savings, so I expanded my search."

She found bistroMD, a specialized diet delivery service, and within a short amount of time was able to lose at least 15 pounds. She was also able to find a form of balance due to portion control and the nutrition provided in the program.

"BistroMD had the best recommendations, and the nutritionist at my cancer center reviewed the menus and said the meals were perfect," she said. "Within two days of starting the program my energy level doubled, and without any sense of effort the ten pounds faded away; I actually felt like I was eating more than usual and the food tastes good."

While she has had to undergo additional treatments, Breese said she's maintained her efforts with the bistroMD service, saying that having health food so readily available has been a "life saver."

"I would absolutely recommend it not only for losing weight in a sane healthy way, but for anyone coming out of surgery or illness because it's healthy, high in protein, which we need for healing, easy, and tastes good," she said. "You can also choose diets for diabetics, low glycemic, gluten free, etc."
