Preparing for Baby (for expectant parents)

A newborn baby may not come with an instruction manual, but this class will help new parents feel confidently prepared for their little one's arrival.  This 2.5 hour class covers many aspects of newborn care, post-partum adjustment, and the transition into parenthood.  Expectant parents will engage in informative discussions and practice the hands-on skills needed to care for a newborn, giving you the confidence to journey into parenthood. We recommend taking this class after the fourth month of pregnancy but before 36 weeks.

Topics discussed will include:

• Overview of normal infant behavior, communication, and appearance
• Baby care basics such as diapering, bathing, and cord care 
• Overview of newborn sleeping and eating habits
• Strategies for soothing, such as swaddling, comfort holds, and other soothing techniques
• Post-partum adjustment for the new mother and new family
• Baby-wearing: learn how to use common baby carriers, practice using and trying on different styles
• Newborn health concerns: taking temperatures, warning signs, when to call your pediatrician
