About Mark:

Mark Richardson is a 25-year resident of Jamaica Plain. A native of western NY and western PA, he was raised in a family of musicians.  All 6 children played instruments which culminated one Chrismtas morning with a  performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #5.

Mark holds a bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Violin Performance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1984), where he studied with Delight Malitsky and a Master’s of Education from UMass Boston (1997).  While at IUP, he performed 3 solo recitals with his stepfather, James G. Staples, as well as numerous concerts with the IUP Symphony Orchestra and the Johnstown Symphony.  Since last Christmas, he has been studying violin again with Sue Rabut of West Roxbury, who has been of immeasurable help. In addition to music, Mark enjoys reading, movies, scuba diving and cycling.

For the past 17 years, Mark has been a Middle School history teacher in the Brockton Public Schools.  He is a 5 time recipient of the Inspirational Teacher Award, given to teachers by students who have been accepted in the National Honor Society at Brockton High School.

About James:

James Staples is a native of Florida who has resided in Indiana, Pennsylvania the past 45 years.  Dr. Staples recently retired from a 50-year career that included six years at SUNY Fredonia, and 44 years at IUP teaching piano and music theory.  Dr. Staples holds degrees from Florida State and a doctorate of musical performance from the Eastman School of Music.  His teachers included Carlisle Floyd, Irwin Freundlich and Liusa Faini.  He has been a recitalist in every state in the Northeast, and has appeared as soloist in Florida and Pennsylvania.

The past twenty years have seen Dr. Staples engage his lifelong passion for music composition, creating works for solo piano and large and small chamber ensembles.  He composed his own piano concerto and has performed it twice with the IUP Symphony Orchestra.  In his spare time, Dr. Staples is an avid concert and theatre-goer: He competes with his stepson Mark to see who can attend the most performances at the Stratford Festival in Ontario.  In his retirement, that is a competition he is certain to win.
