Here Comes Walmart… to our neighborhood?
How Walmart Hurts Workers and Main Street
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 7PM
Walmart has gobbled up much of the local retail market in rural and suburban America, and now it has set its sights on urban retail as its final remaining
“untapped market” – including neighborhoods right here in Boston. As Walmart workers are striking and standing up for their rights, come hear from one of the nation’s leading anti-Walmart activists, Al Norman. Al will be discussing his new book Occupy Walmart.
Al Norman is the foremost anti-Walmart activist in the U.S. For almost 20 years, Norman has helped countless people organize through grassroots efforts to fight the establishment or spread of Walmart and other big-box stores in their hometowns.
Dubbed by 60 Minutes’ Morley Safer, “The guru of the anti-Walmart movement,” Norman is committed to helping citizens have control over their own neighborhoods and cities. Through his website, Sprawl-Busters.com, and his frequent articles on the Huffington Post, Norman helps people understand the issues and mobilize for action.
Norman first attracted national attention in 1993 when he successfully stopped Walmart from locating in his hometown of Greenfield, Massachusetts. He was featured in the PBS documentary Store Wars, in the film Wal-Mart Nation, and served as consultant for the film The High Cost of Low Price. He has written two previous books on the subject: Slam-Dunking Wal-Mart! How You Can Stop Superstore Sprawl in Your Hometown (1999) and The Case Against Wal-Mart (2004). Norman has appeared on the NewsHour, NBC Nightly News, Nightline, the Wall Street Journal Report, CNBC Steals & Deals, Marketplace, the Al Franken Show, Talk of the Nation, NPR’s Here & Now, NPR’s Morning Edition, the Osgood File, and has been covered in Forbes, Time, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and hundreds of daily newspapers.
