DESCRIPTION:Author Susan Naimark discusses her book The Education of a Wh
ite Parent: Wrestling with Race and Opportunity in the Boston Public Sch
ools.&nbsp\; This event is rescheduled from October.\nWhen Jamaica Plain
resident Susan Naimark sent her two sons into the Boston public school
system in the 1990s\, she found that she was getting an education hersel
 f. Not in academic subjects\, but in how race and privilege play out in
school. She watched her children thrive\, while many of their classmates
of color did not\, she writes. Naimark wanted to know why. &ldquo\;To u
nderstand it from the perspective of white privilege\, I had to hold up
the mirror\,&rdquo\; she says. Naimark was appointed to the Boston Schoo
l Committee by Mayor Tom Menino\, and served from 1997 to 2005. She curr
ently works as an independent consultant with public school parents\, gr
assroots groups\, and nonprofit and public agencies to create responsive
  community institutions.
