The Animal Rescue League of Boston is launching a new biweekly “Ask The Vet” section on our blog and we need your input!

Do you have a question that you’ve always wanted to ask your vet, but by the time your pet’s next appointment comes around you’ve forgotten what it is? Well here’s your chance to ask it. What would you like to know from our Animal Rescue League of Boston shelter and BVC vets? Please share your questions in the comments section below and you just might see one of our wonderful vets answer your question. The first blog post addressing your questions will be published in early November, so keep checking our website, www.arlboston.org!

My 1 year old dog had a prolapsed uterus on her first heat at 4 months of age- she had an emergency spay to remove her uterus. However, since puppyhood she is constantly having some medical issue. She has had several urinary tract infections, trouble maintaining weight, loosing whiskers and a swollen nipple…just to name a few. I have “treated” each occurrence and gave antibiotics for the nipple but it did not seem to affect the swelling and there has been no chance since she was last seen. (It does not seem to bother my dog) I have seen my vet over 25 times this year with one off issues and am very concerned that the prolapsed uterus could have affected her hormones and is the main cause of her other medical problems- My vet says there is no connection, but I am not confident in that response. Are you aware of hormonal issues in dogs after a prolapsed uterus? Is there a way to make sure a dog’s hormone levels are in the normal range? My dog also suffers from canine anxiety- do hormones play any part in a dogs ability to cope with stress? I rescued my dog and am committed to her; I want nothing more than her to be healthy and happy. I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thank you!!!
