Jamaica Plain Artist Ginny Zanger Participates in "Fresh Paint Day"

Jamaica Plain artist Ginny Zanger is one of dozens of artists fanning out across Boston on Sunday to paint out in the open. She'll be at Jamaica Pond.

Jamaica Plain painter Ginny Zanger once told Patch "Body and soul — I am drawn to the magical qualities of water." That artistic tendency will be on display again Sunday as she participates in the Copley Society of Art's "Fresh Paint Day." She'll be one of 34 artists fanning out across the city to create fresh art. Fittingly for someone whose work seems always to come back to water, Zanger plans to paint at Jamaica Pond. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. For a map of where all the artists will be, please see the PDF attached to this post. The resulting pieces of art will be auctioned in June as a fundraiser for the Copley Society of Art.

Boston's Big 1: See The Go-Gos In Concert For Mom

It's also the last chance to see the Big Apple Circus.

The first all-female band on the Billboard charts that wrote their own music and played their own instruments is coming to Boston on Sunday. And chances are, your mother remembers them fondly. So take her for Mother's Day to see The Go-Go's at the Wilbur Theater at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $39.50-$57.20. If you're not sure who they are, check out their music here (I'm sure you heard mom humming "Vacation, All I ever wanted," when she came home from work, cooked you dinner, and tucked you in). And if mom is a little more on the wild side, this weekend is the last chance to see the Big Apple Circus in the big tent at City Hall Plaza. Tickets are $20-$100. But after Sunday, its run in Boston, which began on March 27, ends. To find other weekend …

Boston's Big 1: SOWA Market Opens Sunday

One of the bigger events in Boston this weekend is the opening of the SOWA Open Market in the South End.

It's a little bit farmers market, a little bit flea market, craft show and fine arts fair. But there's nothing little about it. Think I mean Saturday's Wake Up The Earth Festival? Well, not quite. This year is SOWA Open Market's biggest opener yet with 140 indie designers, crafters, artists, musicians, farmers, food trucks and much more, according to the people who run it. The Market opens this Sunday, May 6 in a huge space at 460 Harrison Avenue in Boston's South End. And it will be open every Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Oct. 28. There are four distinct sections to the lively marketplace: a farmers market area; an area where jewelry-makers and other craftsmen sell their wares; an indoor vintage market where antiques share space …

Vinyl is King at Jamaica Plain's Tres Gatos

The combination tapas restaurant, book shop, and record store is a great place to build up your album collection

There are likely no places other than Tres Gatos where you can order sheep’s milk cheese, confit of chicken thigh, and a nice glass of sherry, peruse a collection of books by Charles Bukowski, and flip through a chaotically arranged selection of new and used vinyl albums. A recent visit to the record bins at the back of the restaurant-book-music one-stop revealed plenty of gems, in the order they’re listed here: “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” soundtrack, “Best of Emmy Lou Harris,” “Listen” by A Flock of Seagulls, “Caught in the Act” by Grand Funk Railroad, “Frank Sinatra Sings Only for the Lonely,” and “Gaucho” by Steely Dan. And that’s just one small section of just one bin in the used section. Brand new releases – make that …

Life-Size Statue Of Edgar Allan Poe Announced for Just Off Boston Common

Stefanie Rocknak's life-size gray-patina bronze of Edgar Allan Poe and his papers will be installed near the Common, according to the Edgar Allan Poe Foundation of Boston, who sponsored the contest to select the statue.

Edgar Allan Poe wasn't exactly a fan of Boston. He mockingly referred to our city as "Frogpondia" for our supposed shallowness and pretension. But we're raising a statue to the guy anyway. Article, info, and text below provided by The Edgar Allan Poe Foundation of Boston: Stefanie Rocknak, a professional sculptor with a tandem career as a professor of philosophy in New York, has been selected to create a statue to commemorate Edgar Allan Poe in Boston, the city of his birth. "Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most influential writers ever born in the City of Boston. As a city proud of its rich history, I’m so pleased to see this wonderful tribute come to fruition.  The statue chosen for Poe Square is full of life and motion, and is sure to …

Tell the Story of the Break Out Story Slam Series

Video? Photos & text? We're looking for story slam fans/participants to share with Patch readers the upcoming four months of slams at Doyle's.

We at Patch got an email today about what sounds like a fabulous four months of slam storytelling on Sunday nights at Doyle's Cafe. Jamaica Plain is full of creative types. And while the slams are actually in Jamaica Plain (they move to Cambridge in the autumn), we're thinking the storytelling about the storytelling can be as creative as the slam series itself. Got that? So read below, check out the MassMouth URL, and either leave a comment below or email me, Regional Editor Karla Vallance, with your proposal of how you want to tell the slam story for publication on JP Patch. Is it a video montage from each contestant? A photo gallery with captions that somehow convey the essence of each artist? You tell us: Break Out Story Slams @ Doyle’s…

Hot Off the T

Bruins Hockey, White Rabbits, and Marathon Carbo-Loading

Five things to do in Boston this weekend.

Looking for a reason to get out and enjoy the city this weekend? No sweat. We've got you covered. 1) It’s playoff hockey season, and the Bruins are off to a good start, beating the Washington Capitals 1-0 in overtime Thursday night. It’s nigh impossible to get a ticket to Game 2 through legal channels, but you can take part in the playoff atmosphere around the TD Garden at several Boston landmarks, including The Fours, Sullivan’s Tap and Halftime Pizza. The game starts at 3 p.m. Saturday, but it’s a safe bet the revelry starts well before then. Take the Orange Line to North Station. 2) The good folks at Improv Asylum know how to bring the funny. You can check out their latest effort, “Siri, Can You Title Our Show For Us?” at the group’s …
