Route 39 Bus Stop Improvements Coming

Four stops will be lengthened and otherwise enhanced beginning in June.

Four inbound stops along the MBTA 39 bus route in Jamaica Plain will be improved next month.

Stops to be improved are the Seaverns Avenue, St. John Street and Roseway Street stops along Centre Street and the South Huntington Avenue stop at Perkins Street.

Each stop will be built out from the existing curb about three feet, according to Michael Reiskind, Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association member, at a Wednesday meeting.

Other improvements include new benches at the Perkins and St. John stops, new bike racks at the Perkins, Seaverns and Roseway stops, new solar trash compactors at all four stops, new trees at the South Huntington Avenue stop and a new newspaper corral box in front of Purple Cactus and Q Salon.

The new curbs will extend into currently designated no parking space, Reiskind said.

“At all these stops it will still allow a car to pass by,” he added.

Construction should begin before the middle of June, Reiskind said.

Beginning in 2009, MBTA officials met with the public regarding changes to the 39 bus route. It was decided some stops had to be lengthened because new, longer buses could not adequately fit into stops without the back end sticking into the street disrupting traffic, according to Reiskind. Also, bus doors did not in all instances line up with the sidewalk, which is against Americans with Disabilities Act federal regulations.

The 39 bus route runs between Forest Hills and Back Bay stations.
