Readers React to Empty South St. Storefronts

Three addresses are vacant at this section of South Street.

The citizens of Jamaica Plain have spoken: they want a variety of businesses to line the main commercial sectors of the neighborhood.

When Jamaica Plain Patch published a photo of a section of South Street with three vacant storefronts, the public responded with ideas on what should move into the space:

Nicole Pittman said: "Peace o' Pie!! (Vegan pizza place!)"

Eddie G. said: "I would love to see a taco place (we need one of those), coffee shop or a even a wine and cheese shop. But please just like the above JP residents and posters stated, NO MORE SALONS!"

Lindsay LeClair said: "It would be nice to have a gluten free bakery or a non-vintage consignment store."

If it were up to you, what would you place at the spaces between 166 and 170 South St.?

An improved street scape would be a great start. No more of those hideous roll down metal storm things
Trees on the sidewalk , nice store signage, Victorian lighting posts no more fluorescent back lit plastic signs or awnings

I called and left messages for the property owner/manager/rental agent to see if Boston Handmade (a local arts organization) could rent the space and they never returned the calls. Perhaps there's some reason they are leaving the space vacant? All of the suggestions so far sound beneficial to the neighborhood.

Can we please talk about the former locoation of BellaLuna in Hyde Square? I would love to see the huge 'FOR Lease' sign taken down.

Not for anything, but I think someone needs to investigate the owner of that group of buildings. When the dry cleaners were there, there was never any heat for them in the building. It would be 4 degrees outside, and not much more inside. It's no wonder they moved across the street. And I know that JP Variety and the pizza place are insufferably hot in the summer. Seems to me like a horrible landlord is the reason nothing good will go in or last at that group of stores. Can the Patch do an expose?
