Net sales from the Whole Foods store in JP on Tuesday will benefit Urban Edge, a nonprofit that fights the displacement effects of gentrification.

The grocer holds "5 Percent Days" once a quarter, with proceeds going to various local nonprofits. Back in November, one such day raised $30,730 for Community Servings, a JP nonprofit that provides healthy meals for the critically ill.

Tuesday's beneficiary, Urban Edge, is a community development corporation that builds and promotes affordable housing in JP and Roxbury. Back when the debate over Whole Foods' entry into JP was at a fever pitch, activists had demanded the chain give 1 percent of its store revenue to just such causes:

"We demand this 1 percent for the funding of local anti-displacement organizing, especially in Hyde Square, and the creation and/or preservation of local affordable housing, annually for the duration of the store’s 20-year lease."

While gentrification continues to be an issue in JP, a recent review of data by Gazette publisher emeritus Sandee Storey concluded that JP is "not yet close to being gentrified."

Other Whole Foods charitable donations made before or after the store's Oct. 31, 2011 opening include a salad bar at the Curley School and a "5 Percent Day" that benefited Hyde Square Task Force.

Urban Edge's projects include a new skating rink/turf field facility in Jackson Square.

Whole Foods in JP is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and 5 percent of net sales will be given to Urban Edge.
