MBTA Report: Most-used JP Bus is Route 39, Least-used is Route 48

13,568 commuters enter the Orange Line at Forest Hills in a typical weekday.

The MBTA's 2010 Ridership and Service Statistics report (view at right as a PDF), known as the “Blue Book" contains a wealth of data about getting around in Boston.

According to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, "The Hub's transit system is the oldest and fourth largest in the nation [and] has a history longer than that of American independence."

The most recent report, released May 10, includes figures on most and least popular lines and routes, stations' amenities, when timeliness, and vehicle types for all services including buses, trains, ferry and The Ride. The reports' most recent figures are from 2009.

Here are some figures for the parts of the system in Jamaica Plain:

  • In a typical weekday the Authority transports 1,240,441 riders, with the Orange Line carrying 184,961 of these.
  • 13,568 commuters enter the Orange Line at Forest Hills in a typical weekday, making it the ninth most-used station in the system. Check the image section at the right for a list of the top 25 most-used routes.
  • The other three JP stops, in order of use are: Jackson Square (4,968 entries per weekday), Green Street (3,229) and Stony Brook (3,163).
  • Ridership is up at Forest Hills 6 percent for 2009 over 2008.
  • Built between 1979-81 on the corridor intended for Interstate 95 (the construction of which was successfully opposed by the community) and connecting Oak Grove in Malden to Forest Hills in Jamaica Plain for a total of 11.16 miles and 19 stations, the Orange Line deploys 102 cars weekdays down to 36 Sundays.
  • The 39 Bus is the most-used route in JP and third-most used overall, with 14,405 boarding each weekday. Check the image section at the right for a list of the top 25 most-used routes.
  • The 48 Bus (JP Loop) ranked as the 175th most-used route out of 196.

  • The report has a section dealing with the . The most recent news is that the MBTA Board of Directors voted on April 6 to not fund the construction of the project in spite of strong community support for the project.
