Maintenance Work Will Shut Down Ted Williams Tunnel Eastbound Tuesday Night into Wednesday Morning

The state will be cleaning drains and washing the inside of the tunnel Tuesday into Wednesday, so plan your late-night travels accordingly.

 

The Ted Williams Tunnel eastbound will be closed Tuesday night into Wednesday morning for maintenance work, according to the state's Department of Transportation. The closure runs from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Traffic going to East Boston or the airport will be diverted. For complete details, please see the slightly edited advisory below:

MassDOT to Motorists: Plan Ahead for I-90 Restrictions through Boston Ted Williams Tunnel Complete Overnight Lane Closures to Occur in September

The night of Tuesday into Wednesday the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s enhanced maintenance schedule will require complete lane closures of the Ted Williams Tunnel, Interstate 90 Eastbound, through Boston.  

Interstate 90 Eastbound traffic destined for East Boston and Logan Airport will be directed north onto Atlantic Avenue/Cross Street and make the turn to the Callahan Tunnel at Valenti Way/Beverley Street.

A second detour will be active for truckers. Trucks will be directed to utilize the I-93 NB on ramp from Atlantic Avenue at the Seaport Blvd. intersection to Exit 27 Route 1 NB (Tobin) in order to access Route 16 Eastbound to Route 1A Southbound.

Maintenance crews, contractors, along with State and Boston Police will begin set-up for the lane closures on Tuesday evening at 11p.m. The full closure will begin at midnight on Wednesday and last until 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.   Work to be performed includes: cleaning drains and washing walkways, ceilings and walls.

Plan Ahead- One More Lane Closure Date in September:

I-90 Westbound will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 11 p.m. to Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 5 a.m.

MassDOT plans to return to maintenance of I-93 through Boston in October.
