John Martinez says he saw this afternoon's shooting on South Street.

"I heard bang-bang-bang and I ran. I ran for my life," said Martinez, who said the shooting took place behind apartments in the 200 block of South Street.

Martinez gave his account as he and two friends were standing outside two doors down from where the shooting of his friend took place.

Martinez would not give the name of his friend — the shooting victim — but said he was shot in the arm and leg. But Martinez thinks his friend is going to be OK.

Police say one person, a man in his late teens, was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening wounds. The report of a shooting came in at 2:20 p.m., said Officer Eddy Chrispin.

Martinez said two people participated in the shooting and ran toward Anson Street, a small street off of South Street.

The incident shut down South Street between Forest Hills and JP Center this afternoon as police combed the area. A scent dog was brought in, and seemed to express heightened interest in a nearby sign that had been pierced by a bullet. It was not clear if the hole is from today's shooting.

A neighbor who lives on the ridge above the apartments said he heard four or five shots. He declined to give his name.

Police activity focused on the lot behind the apartments that run from 219 to 225 South St. Police had also cordoned off the sidewalk in front of the apartments around what might have been a backpack.

Chrispin said police found ballistic evidence in two vehicles.
