i was a first grade teacher for 37 years, Boston teachers are deeply affected too, as I am. Perhaps Boston parents can do something to acknowledge them, a personal note is especially treasured, since we as teachers really do love our "kids." Just a thought, in addition to helping the Newtown community.

We need to get behind the movement for more gun controls. To do that, we need to take risks and engage people on the other side respectfully but forcefully. Instead of not bringing up the subject of gun control with strangers or acquaintances because it's "controversial", we need to rebut their concerns with logical, common sense arguments. I rebutted my dental higenist who said, "but my dad loves his guns" with 'does he have assault rifles". Oh no, she said. I left it at that. I responded to a woman at the Y who said, "but crazy people will always find a way to kill" with "so let's make it harder for them to impact so many people with a gun". Each time I ended with "as Americans we need to have a conversation about this problem" with a kind smile and no judgement. My model for this is the gay marriage rights movements. If we have made incredible inroads in this area, which it's still an "unmentionable" in many circles, then we can do it with gun control.
Peace.

Yesterday I placed a comment on this page in support of the Sandy Hook Community. The comment was: "Prayer changes things" in hopes that many would pray for that community. The JP Patch deleted that comment, so I am trying again to ask readers to pray for that community which has lost so many and grieves so deeply. Thank you.
