City Feed Tapped as Business of the Year by Centre/South Main Streets

In related news, this year's Centre/South Main Streets Volunteer of the Year is Shamus Moynihan

Every year Mayor Thomas Menino and Boston Main Streets honors a volunteer and business of each of the mayor's 17 Main Streets programs. The award ceremony and reception will take place tonight at Massachusetts Collage of Pharmacy. Each winners will have their hand shaken and a picture taken with the mayor and enjoy a fabulous celebratory reception afterwards.

JP Centre/South Main Streets is proud of announce that this year City Feed and Supply will win Business of the Year.

I can safely say that I know City Feed and Supply almost as well as anyone. I presently live across the street from the Boylston Street City Feed & Supply and visit the store  sometimes three times a day. At 7 a.m., if my room mate/best friend tells me we are out of cream I will head over in slippers. Always I am welcomed with a smile and it is always a pleasure to chat with the staff.  As the executive director of JP Centre/ South Main Streets, I work above City Feed at our main office. I am constantly in City Feed in the morning for a muffin with Anne before we separate and head off to work, for a lunch meeting, for tea with a friend in the late afternoon, or food for a meeting.

I consider the owners David Warner and Kristine Cortese to be leaders in the community and pioneers in the JP "Local Economy" movement. They are talented couple who had a brilliant idea of opening a local market and luckily for us, it worked.

Since opening the first City Feed at 66 A Boylston Street in 2000, City Feed has made it a point to support many of the local organizations and businesses that make our neighborhood a better place. There mission is to be a neighborhood market/café/deli that reflects and serves the needs of the community which sustains it. They work diligently to consistently provide healthy, natural, specialty, local and organic food options. Over the years they have maintained long lasting and strong working relationships with local suppliers. City Feed has 35 staff members at their Centre Street store and 14 at their cozy Boylston Street store. Their unique and innovative business practices and stores have a unweaving positive influence on the their staff.

Lionel Kahan, my favorite staff person at the Centre Street Store, says  he “ truly enjoys the friendly and fast paced work atmosphere and the relationship he has built with the owners and staff. He “loves greeting the repeat and loyal customers and assisting new shoppers learn about the local vendors.” Most of all Kahan, says he is proud to “ sell the high quality products." Kahan joined the staff at City Feed when he arrived in JP and was recently promoted to assistant manager. Jonathan Montanes of the Boylston Street store says he loves his jobs as do his other staff members and he is “ proud to be involved in the Equal Exchange coffee program."

“David and Kristine have been big supporters of the First Thursday program as well as sponsoring local bands to play during the stroll," says Centre/South board member and local realtor Mary Hannon.

They have always been extremely generous with numerous non-profits. As of late, they have spearheaded the JP Shopping Spree campaign which will be kick off again at the July 7 First Thursday. Please look out for details. There is no doubt that Kristine and David will go on to do scores of other inventive projects over the years.

Stop in and congratulate David and Kristine and JP and thank them for their community, dedicated and helping to continue to make JP the amazing town it is.

This year's Centre/South Volunteer of the Year is Shamus Moynihan. He will also be honored at tonight's meeting with the mayor.
