Many people took pictures of the tree with their digital phones and cameras.

Hundreds gathered last Thursday as dignitaries lit the city's main Christmas tree on Boston Common. Each year the Canadian province of Nova Scotia provides the tree, in a gesture of friendship with Boston. The Canadians are grateful for New England's help in the aftermath of the horrific Halifax Explosion of 1917, in which 1,900 people died.
