Mayor Menino’s Boston Cycling Celebration Hits the Road this Weekend

Cyclists from all over the world will ride through the streets of Boston this weekend for the annual Boston Cycling Celebration, featuring the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup and Mayor Menino’s Hub on Wheels Citywide Ride. The two-day biking celebration is one of the nation’s largest weekend cycling festivals, with more than 5,000 cyclists expected to participate in the community ride and more than 200 elite American Professional racers, including Olympians and national champions,  competing in this year’s TD Bank Mayor’s Cup in front of 10,000 spectators.

The TD Bank Mayor’s Cup will host a tight 0.7- mile circuit course on Saturday, Sept. 22, consisting of sharp corners and high-speed chases around Boston’s City Hall Plaza, Government Center, historic Faneuil Hall and the Old State House for one of the country’s most lucrative prize purses-$30,000- split equally between men and women.

The celebration continues on Sunday, Sept. 23, with the popular 8th Annual Hub on Wheels Citywide Ride, which will close Storrow Drive for cyclists and offer three routes (10, 30 or 50 miles) that showcase Boston’s eclectic city neighborhoods. Riders of all ages will enjoy these scenic rides, from the Charles to the Emerald Necklace, South Boston beaches to Boston Harbor. (Cyclists must be at least 10 years old to ride the 10-mile loop and 12 years old for longer routes.) A kids race will also take place, along with a mascot ride, featuring many of New England’s favorite sports mascots.

At the City Hall Plaza starting point, the Boloco Block Party will offer food, entertainment, family-friendly activities and a Harpoon Beer Garden for adults on both Saturday (12pm-6pm) and Sunday (9:30am-2pm). A portion of Hub on Wheels’ proceeds will benefit Technology Goes Home, a tech-training program serving inner-city families through the Boston Public Schools.

The Hub On Wheels rider fee is $45; registration is available online at http://www.bostoncyclingcelebration.com. On-site registration will also be available during Saturday’s TD Bank Mayor’s Cup.
